Whoa, did our Matter Unit keep us busy!!!
First we conducted an experiment to learn what matter is. We discovered by dropping different objects in a cup of water, that matter takes up space. We then learned all about the states of matter and when on a Matter Hunt around the school. After that, we studied the properties of matter. We learned that the molecules behave differently in the three states of matter. You can see with the Cheerios below how the molecules behave in a solid, liquid, and gas.
We then looked at the properties of liquids. We experimented with water drops, to learn that liquids have a property that makes them "stick" together. We also experimented with different liquids and learned that each liquid has a different density.
Here we are making predictions before changing matter:
With sugar cubes, we learned that you can change a solid with extreme force!
With gummy bears, we learned that you can change a solid by contact with a liquid!
We learned that extreme temperature can change solids.
Look what happened when we put a bar of Ivory soap in the microwave!
We also produced gas by dropping Pop Rocks into soda. Both the liquid and the solid contained Carbon Dioxide. The gas released and filled the balloon with air! How. Cool.
We ended our Unit with making Jell-O because the process shows all three states of matter! Yum-o!
i love this! its great! thanks for sharing!
